La Vase Portages Hiking Trails

North Bay

Discovery Routes

Description

The La Vase Portages Conservation Area offers a series of easy looped hiking trails following the north end of the ancient portage route. The historic Voyageur canoe route that connects Trout Lake and Lake Nipissing was used thousands of years ago by First Nations at the time of European contact. Europeans, including Etienne Brule and Samuel de Champlain learned of the route from First Nations guides and it was soon established as a major artery into the interior of North America.
