Lake Nipissing to Callander Bay

Callander, North Bay

Discovery Routes

Description

On a calm day, Lake Nipissing offers a stunning paddling experience to the quiet reaches of an expansive cranberry marsh, part of the Callander Bay Wetland Conservation Reserve. Put your boat in at the public boat launch at Champlain Park at the mouth of La Vase River and paddle down river to Lake Nipissing. Heading south in the shallow waters towards Callander allows for an up close view of the undeveloped shoreline. As you approach Callander Bay you will see the access point to the Cranberry Trail, accessible from the Lake.  Throughout the ages, pickers have frequented the marsh in early October to fill their buckets with wild cranberries. Continue into the marsh or keep going along the shore to Callander Bay.
